Changes, Changes

Rather then rewrite the launch sites pages from scratch, I have decided to take things on different path…
The original kayakvb web site was not initially designed to handle the things it does, I had the grand idea a couple of years ago to rewrite things in a more robust and more manageable form. After several attempts in several different programming languages, added to an increased schedule, I had to find another solution, the maintenance of kayakvb.com, and the dread of having to add a trip, became an excuse for me to blow off kayaking and go do something else, because I am compelled to write about any kayak trips for some strange reason.
Well to make a long story short, while working on another project, I came across a content management system (CMS) that looked like it was what I needed… So I have started working on kayakplaces.com (take a look) essentially a offshoot of kayakvb, not sure yet on the direction I am going to take kayakvb.com, but it will not be going away anytime soon, but it will be improved…
If you have any feedback feel free to leave it here in the comments, or email me at paul at kayakvb.com….

Pocaty River

I am heading down to Pocaty River today, because I heard that the road will be closing for 6 months starting Tuesday June 1, to replace the bridge. I hope they to the launch into consideration, but in case they don’t I’m taking a trip out of there today…
Windsor Castle Park Dedication
On May 22nd the city of Smithfield will formally dedicate Windsor Castle Park, and from what I have seen the park has a great kayak/canoe facility, that I plan on visiting real soon. The park is currently open from dawn to dusk.
Located right in the heart of downtown Smithfield, this 209.8 acre riverside park features a woodland trail system, picnic and play areas, a dog park, kayak and canoe launch, scenic overlook and the Windsor Castle Historic Site.
I am going to change the way I post trips, and where they are posted to…
Going forward all my future trips are going be at trips.kayakvb.com.
Rewriting the whole thing was getting to be just to time consuming, and my job is busier then ever. Add to that the changes in how I process pictures, caused them to look really bad…
Hopefully this efficiency will free up some time and I can continue to add to the launch site list, and make improvements there…

Lake Whitehurst Fishing Station Closed…

The launch site at Lake Whitehurst has closed effective November 1st.
To the best of my knowledge there are no immediate plans to replace or relocate the facility.
The closest launch is at Little Creek Reservoir on Northampton Blvd., and looking at the satellite pictures, it almost looks like you could make under the bridges at Diamond Springs road and the railroad bridge, and make it out to Lake Whitehurst.

I added a new launch site, in Southampton County on the Blackwater River. This launch is about half way between Franklin and The North Carolina border, on South Quay road.
Heading down for a trip today with my daughter, there is absolutely no coverage there, so talk to you later…
