Excuses Excuses

Okay, I have been looking at what I have written over in my trip reports over the past few months, and it has been pretty sparce, even though I’ll be the first to admit that my writting style leaves a lot to be desired.

My schedule has been insane since July, working 50+ hours a week at my primary job, and a lot of other things that have not helped my sanity.

BUT I hope that things in future will be better, and that I will have more time to devote to this, and the primary kayakvb.com website.

What’s going on…

I admit, it appears I’ve been slacking off here, and haven’t posted here in a while.

Well I have been real busy at work, and the spare time that I do have, I have been reworking kayakvb.com. Trying to make the launch site pages better, and also tying them into yahoo maps for directions and such. I am also adding a whole new section, it is not really close to being done yet, but I think many of you will like it.

I have 4 new launch sites to add, mainly in North Carolina, I’ll try to get those up in the next couple of days. Of course I went completly lame, and only took pictures of the one I didn’t launch from, only paddled by… Well I guess I have an excuse to go back then don’t I…

Horn Point Closure

The Back Bay NWR Horn Point Launch facility is closed for the season…

I have heard conflicting reports that the entire facility is closed, and
that just the restrooms are closed…

I will verify the status and let you know….

Ragged Islands Closed

Well I came across this announcement by accident while doing some research, and was somewhat surprised, being as there are no postings that I have seen on or around Back Bay.

All the interior waters of the Ragged Islands are closed until December 31 2007, to all vessels. I contacted the Army Corps of Engineers, and got clarification that the closure includes ALL vessels, powered or not. This kind of bums me out, because that is a real nice place to paddle.

The primary part of the announcement was that there is essentially now a no wake zone that extends 150 yards from all land and marshes in the Back Bay National Wildlife refuge. I think this is a great idea, considering all the damage that is being done to the shoreline in the refuge due to boat wakes.

A pdf of a map of the impacted area can be found here

Mackay Island NWR

Just a reminder, that the Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge will close for the season on October 16th, and is not scheduled to reopen until March 16th 2007.

Another thing to keep in mind that there are breeding pairs of Bald Eagles in the refuge, and if they breed successfully next year, the majority of the refuge will be closed until the chicks fledge, or about mid June 07.

Missed one…

Well looks like I am going to miss making a kayak trip for the first time since early July. The weather forecast is not looking good at all, and I am completely loaded up with work.

Were looking at almost all the elements that individually would keep me off the water, heavy rain, high winds, and thunder storms.
So I guess I see if my Padres can continue in the post season or get swept.
