Well the weather isn’t looking real cooperative for Saturday, Thunder Storms and Showers before 1PM. I am not a big fan of kayaking on a body of water carrying what is essentially an 8 foot Lightning rod…
Sunday looks real promising Temps in the mid to upper 70′, with 10 to 12 MPH of wind out of the North…
It has been just over 2 years since my last trip to Lake Drummond, and it was nice to see that the new Route 17 had opened, and the City of Chesapeake came up with a great idea of the old route 17. They have converted the majority of the old road into a linear park, paralleling the Dismal Swamp Canal. The trail is intended to support a myriad of activities, and is open from sunrise to sunset. I can’t remember of this is my 5th or 6th trip out here, but all the other times I have launched here, I was usually the only one in the parking lot, maybe one other car/truck in the lot, but today the were about 15 to 20 cars in the lot, and there were also plenty of people on bikes on the trail, coming down from the north end of the trail.

Today I completed my 100th trip on KayakVB.com. Lake Drummond is still beautiful.

I just thought that I would mention that the Back Bay Restoration Foundation’s Flyway Feast is coming up in a couple of weeks, sounds like a good time and it supports bringing Back Bay, back to its former glory. Or you may just want to join the Back Bay Restoration Foundation (BBRF), just click the poster for more information on the event, and membership.
Well the whole KayakVB thing started just about a year and a half ago, when I decided to start keeping track of my kayak trips for family and friends back in San Diego. The first trip I posted was a New Years Day trip out to Lake Drummond, in Chesapeake. I still remember that trip, it was a beautiful day, a little crisp in the morning, but warming up to the mid 60′s by the afternoon. There was no wind, and the lake was like glass.
If the weather cooperates this weekend, I may do the trip this Saturday in honor of my 100th trip.

Lake Drummond in January
I just looked at my trip reports, and realized that it has been 2 years since I have been out there..

I knew I was running low on battery power for the camera, but when I got home and was getting ready to download from the camera, it wouldn’t turn on, the battery was completely dead… So it will take a couple of hours for the battery to charge, and then I will upload them to the web…

Milldam Creek

We did short trip on Milldam Creek today, got a late start.

This was the first time I/we launched from the bridge. The rocks are a bit loose in places so watch your step. This is technically a roadside launch, parking is very limited, not much clearance from the road, and about 60 yards or so to the bridge.
This is from the parking to the launch

I really had to take it easy yesterday, after falling on Friday, and 6 Miles on Saturday, and pain Saturday Night, relaxing on Sunday was the right thing to do…
I guess I jynxed myself, because shorlty after my last post, it seems everyone decided that the Northwest River was the place to be…
A bunch of power boats, anjets skis were cruisong the river…
All in all not a bad trip, 6.2 miles…
I’ll have all the pictures up at KayakVB soon
It was a nice paddel down Smiths Creek, I made it to the Northwest river. A couple of fishermen on the creek, but not much else. Almost no traffic on the river, strange for the first weekend of summer.
A lot more wind on the river then the creek, but not bad…
I think I took way to many pictures of Iris’s again, but they are only here for a ciuple weeks…
I think I may have worked out some of the issuses with the camers, but I won’t know for sure until I upload them…
Trying out something new today, so we’ll see how it works…
I set up remote capabilities to post…
Getting ready to head out from Smiths Creek, in Chesapeake. Looks like a couple of others are already out on the water, not sure if they are kayakers or boaters. Passed by Doizer Bridge, North Landing River, and Pocaty River and those spots were empty, seems like a waste of a good day.
Water levels look good and the wind doesn’t seem to bad…
I’ll post more in a bit when I’m on the river if conditions permit…
