I noticed a degradation of the images I am uploading to the site, not sure if it is something related to some upgrade to the image handling software, or something in my code that is not working right, or if the issue is with the way my new camera and software handle the images, or all of the above…
The thing that I have found out is that it is something to do with resizing the image, and I think I have a short term fix in place. where when I scale down the image, I scale it to the same size that is being resented on the page itself. I am resizing the images, because when I started this, storage was limited, and I had some design issues, the watermarking etc… I am tempted to start uploading full size images, because I have a lot of space now, I think when I started I was limited to 5GB of storage, and now I think I have somewhere around 500GB available and Im using about 50GB…
I am working on it, and I am my worst critic…

Added Back Bay NWR Launch Site

I don’t know why I have been so remiss in adding the launch site at the Back bay National Wildlife Refuge Visitor center, but today I had the chance to launch from there. So without further delay here is the…
Back Bay NWR Visitor Center

The launch is adjacent to the parking lot, is is probably on of the better alternatives if you have to get out on Back Bay despite low water, but keep in mind it can be crowded, even in winter.
Adding 3 more launches today, bringing the total to 81.
All 3 of these new sites are in North Carolina, and look to provide some interesting adventures.
Dismal Swamp State Park
Came across this on quite by accident, when driving down Highway 17, and noticed the new Center on the far side of the canal. The park it self sounds like a great place to spend a day or two, with over 20 miles of trails, a boardwalk that is currently being extended to over 2,000 feet.
Shoups Landing
Another great North Carolina Wildlife Commission facility, on the Chowan River, just across the river from Winton North Carolina.
Tunis Boat Launch
Located in the town of Tunis, this is a somewhat small site, with 2 ramps.

Took a road trip the other day on a scouting mission for more launch sites, had 10 on the list, but could only make it to 7. I’ll add the others, as soon as I can make a visit to them. The total of launch sites is now 76 and growing all the time. I also have 4 or 5 that I have not entered yet, because I cant remember where I put the pictures.
The new sites are all on the Pamunkey and Mattaponi rivers, and are as follows…
Aylett Public Boat Ramp
Aylett Public Boat Ramp on the Mattaponi River
Lestor Manor
Lestor Manor Boat Launch on the Pamunkey River
Little Page Bridge Public Boat Slide

Melrose Landing

West Point Public Boat Launch

West Point Beach Park
West Point Beach Park on the York River
Trying to see if I can make it to 100 before the end of the year, not sure that I’ll have the time…
Again if you have recommendations, I’ll check them out, and add them. My basic criteria is that they are publicly accessible, preferably free (Small fee ok), and are located somewhere on this map, and yes the map does cover more and more area all the time.
Went through and validated all the outbound links on the site tonight. Had to remove a couple that didn’t meet my criteria for inclusion on the site. There were also a couple that were gone or no longer pertinent to kayaking in general.
I also have a list of links that I’ll be adding real soon…
Probably going to do some re-categorization work soon, and add a couple of new categories…
If you have any links that you don’t see please feel free to contact me, and I’ll check them out…
Over the last 2 weekends I had the chance to visit and add 2 more launch sites, on the peninsula.
Messick Road Boat Launch
Peterson’s Yacht Basin
Weather today was not good for kayaking, so my daughter and I went out exploring, and visited 3 new launch sites, and those have been added to KayakVB.
General Vaughan Bridge
This is on the Nottoway River, just a few miles from the North Carolina Border.
Murfreesboro Boating Access
A nice launch site provided by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.
Merchants Millpond
A great place, that I have been trying to get to since June.
Saturday afternoon, I took a drive to a few launch sites close to me to see how the wind from Hanna affected them, Despite what the local media would have you believe, other then a little high water, Hanna was nothing compared to Ernesto…
All in all, the only issue I really had was the flooding at Horn Point….
p.s. I have a few more launch sites to be added soon…
