CAT | Launch Site Updates

The launch site at Lake Whitehurst has closed effective November 1st.

To the best of my knowledge there are no immediate plans to replace or relocate the facility.

The closest launch is at Little Creek Reservoir on Northampton Blvd., and looking at the satellite pictures, it almost looks like you could make under the bridges at Diamond Springs road and the railroad bridge, and make it out to Lake Whitehurst.

I added a new launch site, in Southampton County on the Blackwater River. This launch is about half way between Franklin and The North Carolina border, on South Quay road.

Added a couple more launch sites today…

Captain Quarters Park

Captains Quarters Park is located on Willoughby Bay.
I saw this on the map when I was planning a trip around Willoughby Bay, I saw it from the HRBT bridge, and decided to take a look.

I don’t know why I have been so remiss in adding the launch site at the Back bay National Wildlife Refuge Visitor center, but today I had the chance to launch from there. So without further delay here is the…

Back Bay NWR Visitor Center

The launch is adjacent to the parking lot, is is probably on of the better alternatives if you have to get out on Back Bay despite low water, but keep in mind it can be crowded, even in winter.

Adding 3 more launches today, bringing the total to 81.

All 3 of these new sites are in North Carolina, and look to provide some interesting adventures.

Dismal Swamp State Park

Came across this on quite by accident, when driving down Highway 17, and noticed the new Center on the far side of the canal. The park it self sounds like a great place to spend a day or two, with over 20 miles of trails, a boardwalk that is currently being extended to over 2,000 feet.

Another great North Carolina Wildlife Commission facility, on the Chowan River, just across the river from Winton North Carolina.

Located in the town of Tunis, this is a somewhat small site, with 2 ramps.

Took a road trip the other day on a scouting mission for more launch sites, had 10 on the list, but could only make it to 7. I’ll add the others, as soon as I can make a visit to them. The total of launch sites is now 76 and growing all the time. I also have 4 or 5 that I have not entered yet, because I cant remember where I put the pictures.

The new sites are all on the Pamunkey and Mattaponi rivers, and are as follows…

Trying to see if I can make it to 100 before the end of the year, not sure that I’ll have the time…

Again if you have recommendations, I’ll check them out, and add them. My basic criteria is that they are publicly accessible, preferably free (Small fee ok), and are located somewhere on this map, and yes the map does cover more and more area all the time.

Over the last 2 weekends I had the chance to visit and add 2 more launch sites, on the peninsula.
