Windsor Castle Park Dedication
On May 22nd the city of Smithfield will formally dedicate Windsor Castle Park, and from what I have seen the park has a great kayak/canoe facility, that I plan on visiting real soon. The park is currently open from dawn to dusk.
Located right in the heart of downtown Smithfield, this 209.8 acre riverside park features a woodland trail system, picnic and play areas, a dog park, kayak and canoe launch, scenic overlook and the Windsor Castle Historic Site.
Heading out to the Notoway River today. Launching from the General Vaughn bridge launch
Change of plans, on the blackwater instead, found a new launch.
The recent cold snap and stiff North winds had the expected effect on the areas around Back Bay.
It has been a combination of several things, including the heat and potential for T-Storms, but I just haven’t been motivated to hit the water this summer. I have wanted to make some trips out West, but the fires and my work schedule have been just kicking my butt.
Ok I am willing to shoulder some of the blame, because I am 2 versions behind, but not much of the blame…
Why do Garmin’s MetroGuide V5 Maps suck so bad in North Carolina, I was out kayaking today, and a couple of islands are missing, like swan island, as well a couple channels. Here is a google map link to where the arrow ont the GPS is pointing to.
When you and when you cross into North Carolina on the Northwest River it turns into a very fine line, instead of the wide river it is, as illustrated below and in this google map link.
I still love my GPS 60, but not real happy with missing islands and such
I feel this is a noble cause, and you should really consider supporting it.
A team of 4 Virginia Beach Fire Fighters will be paddling 1,000 miles from Ft Lauderdale to Virginia Beach. The goal of this effort is to raise $20,000 to support The Shriners Burns Institute.
Northern Virginia Rowing Club (NVRC)
For those of you in the Northern Virginia area, and want to try something new, like paddling backwards, here is your chance.
The Northern Virginia Rowing Club, home waters are the Occoquan River at Sandy Run Regional park, they have a Learn To Row program that begins in June, with several programs that continue through October. So if you are looking for a something on the water a little different, head on over and take a look.
The other day I mentioned in Camera Klutz, I shared my stupidity in dropping my camera in the hard packed gravel (Only a few inches from soft mushy grass), and damaging the lens. For some reason, when I bought the camera, broke down and bought the extended warranty, not something I normally do but I’m glad I did this time. My wife dropped the lens off at the Ritz Camera, where I purchased it, and apparently the lens is covered, and I should see the repaired lens or a replacement in a couple weeks.
I added 3 more launch sites tonight, all are on the peninsula, and I have a few more that I’ll add as soon as I can.
Those added today are Buckroe Beach and Sunset Creek in Hampton and Smith’s Landing in York County
I just looked and that bring the number to 50 launch sites, cool…
It has been just over 2 years since my last trip to Lake Drummond, and it was nice to see that the new Route 17 had opened, and the City of Chesapeake came up with a great idea of the old route 17. They have converted the majority of the old road into a linear park, paralleling the Dismal Swamp Canal. The trail is intended to support a myriad of activities, and is open from sunrise to sunset. I can’t remember of this is my 5th or 6th trip out here, but all the other times I have launched here, I was usually the only one in the parking lot, maybe one other car/truck in the lot, but today the were about 15 to 20 cars in the lot, and there were also plenty of people on bikes on the trail, coming down from the north end of the trail.
